Intellectual Property Policy

Last updated:

This Intellectual Property Policy explains what Field and Reel owns, what you are welcome to do with it, what you may not do, how we avoid using other people’s trademarks and artwork, and how to report a concern. It complements our DMCA page, which covers the formal process for copyright notices, and our Terms of Service, which form the overall agreement for using the site. The short version: buying a shirt makes the shirt yours, but the design on it stays ours. And if you think we have used something that belongs to you, tell us at [email protected] and we will look at it promptly.

At a glance

  • Ours: the Field and Reel name and logo, our designs and artwork, product images, mock-ups, page text and site layout.
  • You may: wear, use and gift what you buy, share links to our pages and post photos of your own purchases.
  • You may not: copy our designs onto other products, sell them, or use our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you.
  • Other people’s rights: we do not knowingly print team logos, brand marks, agency emblems or copied artwork, including in personalization.
  • Concerns: email [email protected] with the subject “IP concern”; we acknowledge within 1 business day.

1. What we own

Everything that makes Field and Reel recognisable belongs to us or is used with permission. That includes:

  • the names “Field and Reel” and “Fieldandreel”, our logo (the reel-and-hook mark in a circle with the field horizon) and our wordmark;
  • the original designs and artwork printed on our products, including fish, wildlife and landscape illustrations, lettering and layouts;
  • product photographs, mock-ups and banner images on the site;
  • the text of our product descriptions, category introductions, policies, guides and other pages;
  • the selection and arrangement of content on the site.

These are protected by copyright, trademark and other laws in the United States and in other countries, including Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Using them without permission, beyond what this policy allows, may infringe our rights.

2. What you may do

We want people to enjoy and talk about what they buy. You are welcome to:

  • wear, use, wash, give away or resell second-hand the individual items you bought from us;
  • take photos of yourself, your crew or your dog wearing our shirts and share them on social media or in fishing and hunting forums;
  • share links to our product and category pages, along with a short quotation or the product name, to recommend a design;
  • print or save a copy of a page for your own reference, such as our Size Guide or a policy you want to keep.

3. What you may not do

Without our written permission, please do not:

  • copy, trace, download or recreate our designs to print them on shirts, hats, stickers, decals, mugs, boat wraps or any other product, whether for sale or to give away;
  • sell our designs or products made from them on marketplaces, print-on-demand platforms, social media shops or at events, except for second-hand sale of items you genuinely bought from us;
  • use our product photos, mock-ups or page text on another website or listing;
  • use the Field and Reel name or logo in a business name, domain name, social media handle, advertisement or product in a way that could make people think you are us or are endorsed by us;
  • use automated tools to scrape our designs or images in bulk;
  • remove or alter any copyright notice or watermark on our content.

If you want to use our work in a way not covered here, such as a feature in a club newsletter or a collaboration idea, ask us first. We often say yes to reasonable, non-commercial requests.

4. Our trademarks

“Field and Reel”, “Fieldandreel” and our logo identify our store and products. Please do not use them, or anything confusingly similar, to identify another business or product. Writing a fair, accurate review that mentions us by name is fine, as is saying truthfully that a shirt you are reselling second-hand is a Field and Reel shirt. Using our logo on your own products, adverts or packaging is not.

5. Respecting other people’s rights

Fishing and hunting are full of famous names: tackle and gun brands, boat makers, sports teams, wildlife agencies and conservation organisations. Their names and logos belong to them, and we keep them off our products. We do not knowingly create or sell designs that use:

  • sports team, league, college or club names and logos without a licence;
  • outdoor, tackle, firearm, vehicle or boat brand names and logos;
  • official emblems of government agencies, wildlife departments or military units;
  • characters, film titles or artwork from other creators;
  • the likeness of real, identifiable people without permission.

The same rules apply to personalization. When you add text to a personalized design, you confirm that you have the right to use it, as set out in our Terms of Service. We may decline to print personalization that appears to use someone else’s trademark or copyrighted material, such as a brand name presented as a logo or a line of song lyrics. When we decline, we contact you to suggest a change or refund the item in full. Your club’s own name, your boat’s name and your family name are of course fine, provided you are entitled to use them.

6. Similar ideas versus copying

Outdoor apparel shares a lot of common ground. Many shops sell shirts with bass, deer, ducks, flags, sunsets and jokes about the one that got away. Common subjects, phrases and styles are not owned by anyone. What is protected is a particular expression: a specific drawing, a specific photograph, a distinctive arrangement of words and images, or a registered mark used to identify goods. When we review a concern, we compare the specific expression, and we expect the same approach from anyone reviewing a concern about our designs.

7. Club, tournament and team names in group orders

Group orders often carry a name: a bass club, a walleye tournament, a deer camp or a family reunion. Small, informal names that belong to your own group are fine to print. Established organisations are different. Many tournament series, leagues and conservation groups have registered names and logos, and printing them without permission can infringe their rights even when your team takes part in their events. If you are ordering on behalf of such an organisation, make sure you have its permission. We may ask for confirmation before printing, and if permission is unclear we will suggest wording that describes your team without using the organisation’s mark, such as “Lake Champlain Crew 2026” instead of a tournament’s official logo name.

8. Product photos and mock-ups

The images on our product pages show how a design is placed on a garment or item. Some are photographs and some are digital mock-ups. Both are our content and are covered by this policy. Please do not reuse them in your own listings, even if you are reselling a genuine item you bought from us second-hand; take your own photo instead. If you are a journalist or blogger writing about outdoor apparel and would like to use an image, email us and we will usually be glad to help, provided the image is credited and linked.

9. How to report an intellectual property concern

If you believe something on our site uses your trademark, copyright or other rights without permission, email [email protected] with the subject “IP concern” and include:

  1. your name, the organisation you represent if any, and how to contact you;
  2. a description of the right you own, such as a registered trademark number, a link to your original artwork, or a description of your work;
  3. the URL of each page or product on our site you are concerned about, and which element you mean;
  4. a short explanation of why you believe the use is not authorised;
  5. a statement that the information you provide is accurate and that you are the rights owner or authorised to act for them.

For copyright concerns, you may instead use the formal notice process on our DMCA page, which lists the elements the law requires. You can also write to us by post at Fieldandreel, 6910 Scholl Road, Franklin, OH 45005, United States.

10. What happens next

How we handle an intellectual property concern
Stage What we do
Acknowledgement We confirm we have received your concern within 1 business day and ask for anything missing.
Interim action Where the concern is specific and credible, we take the listing offline and pause open print jobs for that design while we review.
Review We check how the design was created or licensed and compare it with your work or mark.
Outcome We tell you what we decided: permanent removal, a change to the design, or an explanation of why we believe the use is lawful.
Follow-up If we removed a design, we make sure it is not re-listed and check related designs.

We try to resolve straightforward concerns within a few business days. Complex cases can take longer, and we keep you updated. Nothing in this process prevents either side from seeking legal advice or using the remedies the law provides.

11. If you see a copy of our designs elsewhere

If you spot one of our designs being sold by another seller, on another website or at an event, we would be grateful if you let us know. Send us the link or a photo and where you saw it. We do not authorise other sellers to print our designs, so a copy sold elsewhere is not a Field and Reel product, and we cannot handle returns or quality issues for items bought from other sellers.

12. Ideas and feedback

We love design suggestions, such as a species we have not drawn yet or a saying your fishing buddies always use. If you send us an idea, we may use it to develop products without payment or credit, as explained in our Terms of Service. If you are an artist who wants to submit original artwork under a formal arrangement, please contact us first rather than sending the artwork, so that we can agree terms before either side shares anything.

13. Permission requests and contact

To ask for permission to use our name, logo, images or designs, or to report a concern, email [email protected]. Tell us who you are, what you would like to use, where and for how long. We reply within 1 business day. For other questions, visit our Contact Us page or the Help Center.
